About

Home automation and homelab, from someone who actually runs both.

I’m a geek that loves words and has been tinkering with everything tech-related since I could get my hands on my first Intel DX4 100. It’s been a while since then and I still have that love for tech. That’s me running a home lab, virtualized appliances, a mostly automated smart home, among a few other things. You’ll find me running things like OPNsense, TrueNAS, Home Assistant, Proxmox VE, and Docker at home as I cosplay as a Sysadmin.

I set up this site to document some of the struggles and learnings I’ve had in the hope that it helps anyone else.

In my past lives I’ve been a staff writer for ZDNet and other CBS Interactive publications, before running communications for tech companies both in-house and at agencies.

I’m human! But I do use a bit of AI help!

In the interests of transparency and full disclosure, I sometimes use AI to help me with some of the heavy lifting, but I never simply let it write everything or mindlessly publish. Sometimes that means asking it to review what I’ve written, take a stab at a first outline, or perform an interview so I can organise my thoughts. Everything you read goes through me, a human being.

And just in case you’re wondering, this page is 100% human-written.

Affiliate links support this site

They say love doesn’t pay the rent, and in this case, the rent is my little server hiding out in my closet. I’ve tried to keep my site costs low so I can stay online, but there’s always overheads. I figure the easiest way to keep this sustainable is to use affiliate links and stay transparent about it.

My promise is that I’ll never promote anything I don’t believe in myself, and I’ll never trick anyone into clicking on anything. I’m not a huge fan of aggressive advertising and since affiliate links don’t cost readers anything, I figure it’s the best win-win so long as I’m always honest with you about it.
